3D Printers Take On Mars

3D printing technology has been gaining traction over the past few years as the devices are improved and made available to industrial firms.

However, while most analysts agree that mainstream use of 3D printing is still years away, NASA says it may soon be using the technology light years away.

NASA has been developing a 3D print project that designs printers capable of printing on Mars. Researchers are working to create a printer that uses the sand found on the surface of Mars to create airtight, radiation-proof shelters.

The project suggests that 3D printing researchers are anticipating the need for such technology if astronauts ever do make their way to the red planet.

Other Outer Space Printing

NASA isn't the only organization looking to take 3D printing out of this world. The European Space Agency has been experimenting with how to use moon dust to build a printable lunar base.

While large scale projects like a structure on the moon are still years away from becoming a viable option, smaller projects involving 3D printing in space are nearing fruition.

NASA has been working with a Texas-based company in order to develop food printing technology for astronauts on long journeys. The printer would allow astronauts to have more choice when it comes to outer space dining and could give the crew's meals a longer shelf life.

Back in December, a wrench designed by California's Made In Space Inc. was printed aboard the international space station. The wrench marked an important development in space travel as the first ever tool to be printed in orbit.
