initial success with its latest smartphones is pushing back production of a new and larger version of its computer tablets, according to a report Thursday. Large-scale manufacturing of the new devices had been planned to start in December, but Apple's contract factories in China are too busy trying to meet demand for the company's iPhone 6 plus, The
Wall Street Journal
said. The output of the 5.5-inch iPhone 6 Plus "remains unsatisfactory,” according to the supplier. “It would be challenging for display makers to split resources and spend a few months to ramp up production for a new larger screen iPad now.” The report said production will start "early next year." Apple last year obtained revenue of about $32 billion from the sale of iPads versus $91 billion from its phones. Mac revenue amounted to $21 billion. Apple is expected to unveil its latest range of iPads and Mac personal computers along with the launch of its Apple Mac OS X Yosemite operating system at a press event October 16 in Cupertino, California. Despite widespread speculation that verges on certainty, Apple hasn't confirmed its new iPad range will include a larger iPad featuring a 12.9-inch screen. Its currently available iPad Mini has a 7.9-inch screen size, while the iPad Air has a 9.7-inch screen. Apple traded recently at $101.69 a share, up nearly 1 percent.
