Brazilian Presidential Candidate Eduardo Campos Killed In Plane Crash

Adding to a series of tragic plane crashes is a report from GloboNews TV that Brazilian presidential candidate Eduardo Campos was killed in a Santos crash.

According to Reuters, the private jet lost contact with ground control as it attempted to land. Police reported that there are fatalities, but did not give additional details.

Campos was the leader of the Brazilian Socialist Party and announced in April that he would run for president. According to polls, Campos was in third place for the position. Marina Silva, Campos’ running mate, was not on the plane, reported Reuters.

This news has sent shares of Brazilian stocks sharply lower. The iShares Brazil ETF EWZ was last down 0.6 percent (compared to a 0.7 percent gain on the S&P 500). The ETF fell as much as 2.6 percent.
