Target Stops Selling the Amazon Kindle

News was coming through on Wednesday that Target
TGT
has decided to stop selling the Amazon
AMZN
Kindle e-readers and tablets. The dates that the devices will no longer be on Target shelves has yet to be confirmed, though tech blog The Verge has said that May 13 will be the last shipment date. Target has also declined to state any reason for the decision but, as is usually the case with this sort of thing, one would imagine that it can only come down to sales figures. Not necessarily though. The decline is startling for AMZN. Only last year, TGT said that the Kindle Fire was its biggest selling tablet on Black Friday, which only makes this decision all the more puzzling. Perhaps the deal is recently struck with Apple
AAPL
to sell the iPad included some sort of clause preventing it from selling the Kindle? Of course, that is just speculation, and it would be weird because retailers like Best Buy
BBY
and Wal-Mart
WMT
sell both Kindles and iPads. For now, we'll have to wait and see, and perhaps indulge in detective-like guesswork. What is for certain is that, later this year, we won't be able to buy a Kindle at Target.
