According to the
San Francisco Business Times
, several companies evicted from Pier 38 by the Port of San Francisco have started a petition. The evictions came about because of apparent safety violations due to an ad hoc technology incubator that is in violation of the master tenant's lease. The petition drive aims to pressure officials to let the companies stay where they are. According to the story in the SFBT, “Mayor Ed Lee's office, which was not informed in advance last week when the Port issued eviction notices requiring businesses to leave by Sept. 30, has already responded to public pressure from representatives of the roughly 50 small technology start-ups and other businesses at Pier 38.” Mayor Lee had fire officials and building inspectors look over the pier on Tuesday, and a meeting was scheduled for Friday to discuss the findings. One can only hope that common sense prevails, and bureaucracy for the sake of it fails. Of course, safety concerns have to be addressed, but the livelihoods of these business owners has to be taken seriously too.
