Who’s Esurance Motorcycle Insurance for?

Esurance is for riders who want to bundle deals, who value companies that offer many discounts, live in one of the states Esurance offers policies in and who want the cheapest coverage possible.

Esurance Motorcycle Insurance Policy Types

Motorcycle insurance works very similarly to auto insurance. You might already know that every state requires that you have at least the following 2 types of coverage:

  • Bodily injury liability insurance: Bodily injury liability insurance compensates anyone you physically injure during a collision.
  • Property damage liability insurance: Property damage liability insurance compensates anyone whose property you damage during a collision. The word “property” usually refers to other vehicles, buildings or fencing that get caught in the crossfire of a collision.

Almost every state requires that you have some form of bodily injury and property damage liability insurance for your motorcycle. Select states may also require personal injury protection, which covers select medical expenses and sometimes lost income. The only exception to this rule is in Florida, where motorcyclists aren’t legally required to have liability insurance.

The specific amount of coverage that you’ll need depends on where you live. Some states require motorcyclists to have very high coverage limits, while others only require a small amount.

All of Esurance’s motorcycle policies include your state’s minimum liability insurance. In addition, you can customize your policy with optional coverages. Some of Esurance’s most popular additional coverages include:

  • Collision coverage: Collision coverage compensates you for damage done to your vehicle after an accident.
  • Comprehensive coverage: Comprehensive coverage compensates you for damage sustained to your vehicle outside of an accident. Some common examples include damage from hail, theft and collisions with animals.
  • Uninsured motorist coverage: Unfortunately, not every driver on the road has the insurance they’re supposed to have. Uninsured motorist coverage compensates you if you’re involved in an accident with a driver who doesn’t have insurance.

Esurance Motorcycle Insurance Policy Options

In addition to state-minimum coverage and its most popular add-ons, Esurance also offers the following optional coverages:

  • Total loss coverage: Total loss coverage means that Esurance pays you to purchase the current model of your bike’s make and model. You’ll only receive the current fair market value of the make and model you own if you don’t have total loss coverage and you total your bike.
  • Medical payments coverage: Medical payments coverage helps you pay off medical bills after an accident. Medical payments coverage can be a lifesaver if you don’t have health insurance or you have low insurance benefits. However, if you do have health insurance, keep in mind that you may be required to reach your deductible with your health insurance before your medical payment coverage starts paying out.
  • Optional equipment coverage: All Esurance policies come with $3,000 worth of coverage for any modifications or additions you make to your bike in most states. You can also buy up to $30,000 worth of additional coverage.
  • Trip interruption coverage: Trip interruption coverage compensates you if your motorcycle breaks down while you’re on a road trip. Esurance’s trip interruption coverage includes compensation for $100 of lodging expenses per day, $50 of transportation expenses per day and $50 of food expenses per day. The maximum payout per incident is $500.
  • Towing and labor coverage. Towing and labor coverage compensates you for bills you incur when you move your bike after it breaks down.

Esurance doesn’t currently offer personal injury protection, guest passenger liability insurance, roadside assistance or rental coverage. This makes Esurance’s coverage selections a bit weaker than competitors.

Available Discounts and Tips on Getting the Best Rates

Esurance can offer you a number of discounts.

  • Multi-vehicle discount: Do you have more than one motorcycle, ATV or another vehicle to insure? Esurance offers bundling discounts for drivers who add more than 1 vehicle to their policy.
  • Homeowners discount: Esurance offers a discount to homeowners who insure both their motorcycle and home through a combined policy.
  • Recovery device discount: Save money and protect yourself when you install a theft recovery device on your bike.
  • Paid-in-full discount: You’ll receive a deep discount if you’re able to pay your premium in full instead of in monthly increments.
  • Responsible driver discount: Esurance will give you a discount on your motorcycle policy if you’ve gone at least 2 years without an accident.
  • Safety course discount: You’ll receive a discount on your policy if you voluntarily take and pass a motorcycle safety course.
  • Switch-and-save discount: Esurance allows you to save up to 15% when you switch your motorcycle insurance from a competing company to Esurance.
  • Anti-lock brakes discount: You’ll get a discount on your policy if your bike has anti-lock brakes.
  • Association discount: Esurance offers discounts to members of 20 motorcycle associations.

Most motorcycle insurance companies offer some discounts, but Esurance scores high marks for its wealth of ways to save.

Esurance offers 2 methods to contact customer service:

  • You can reach Esurance’s team via email using its online form. Esurance claims to respond to all inquiries within 24 hours.
  • You can reach Esurance’s team by phone at 1-800-378-7262. Its customer service team is available from 7 a.m. to 1 a.m. EST, 7 days a week.

Claims Support

You can file a claim online or directly through an Esurance rep over the phone. Here’s what you can expect when you need to file.

  • Collect information about your claim. Before you file a claim with Esurance, you’ll need to collect a little information about what happened, including:
    • The names of everyone involved in an accident
    • The phone numbers of everyone involved in an accident
    • The insurance information of everyone involved
    • License plate numbers of all vehicles involved
    • Photos of the damage
    • Statements of any witnesses, if applicable

Provide the information you’ve collected to your representative when prompted.

  • Wait to hear back from your representative. Esurance takes care of the rest. An adjuster will contact your claims representative and give him or her an estimate of the damage. Your adjuster will also tell your representative if repairing your bike is possible or if it’s better to buy a new vehicle. Your claims representative will take a look at the adjuster’s report, compare it to your policy and coverage and contact you with a settlement.
  • Close your claim. Your policy may determine that you’re entitled to a payout. If so, your insurance representative will contact you to discuss the best payment method. Your rep will help you close your claim once you get your money.

You can track the status of your claim through your online Esurance account.

Pricing and Value

We shopped for motorcycle insurance with a few different providers to find the lowest rates using the following metrics:

  • Model: 2017 Harley Davidson FLHTK Ultra Limited
  • Sex: Male
  • Age: 35 years old
  • Marital status: Married
  • Driving record: No accidents
  • Driving experience: Driving 5+ years w/ motorcycle license

Esurance returned us a quote of $387 per year. Compared to other companies like Farmers ($587 per year), Progressive ($970 per year) and Nationwide ($695 per year), Esurance’s policies are exceptionally affordable. Esurance might be right for you if you want to insure your bike with the most affordable coverage possible.

Is Esurance Right for Your Ride?

Should you insure your motorcycle with Esurance? The answer depends on your unique situation. Let’s say you’re looking for an affordable policy and you don’t care about extended coverage options. Esurance’s low-cost policies might be just what you’re looking for. Its host of discounts can also make your policy even more affordable, especially if you already have insurance with Esurance.

However, Esurance’s policies aren’t available in every state and it doesn’t have the deep coverage options that other companies provide. This can leave you without quite enough coverage if you ever do need to file a claim.
