What Factors Impact Your Premium?

Car insurance quotes vary greatly depending on factors like state, age, driving record, and coverage options. Get a custom quote in minutes using an online quote tool and discover which company suits you best. A military discount may be one of the many car insurance discounts that you qualify for.

Something to keep in mind is that choosing to not continue auto insurance coverage while you're deployed (even if your car is being stored off-road and not driven) can have an impact on your auto insurance premiums. For example, a lapse in coverage for an extended period of time could increase your rates when you return. And not carrying car insurance on a car registered to you may be illegal in some states. Check out your state's minimum liability laws to know more. Some states, like Michigan, allow you to waive coverage requirements with a special form.

Auto Insurance Coverage Types

Not all auto policies are created equal when it comes to coverage options. Some car insurance companies offer a wide range of options while others prefer to keep the options limited and straightforward. Frequently Asked Questions

Q

Do you get a military discount on car insurance?

A

Many car insurance providers offer at least a 15% discount for active and retired military members. Most providers will state on their website whether or not this type of discount is offered — but be sure to ask your agent or customer service representative if you don’t see this type of discount offered.

Q

Do I need car insurance while I'm in the military?

A

This may depend on your state, but you may be required to carry a minimum amount of insurance even while you’re deployed and not using your car.

You always have the choice whether or not to keep your insurance active, but it can come with consequences, including not meeting minimum legal requirements for your state or your car insurance rates going up when you return. And if something happens to your car while you’re away, even if it’s stored off-road and not being driven, you’ll be responsible for any associated expenses.

Some states will allow you to show proof that your car will be stored and not being driven in order to waive minimum liability requirements — but remember, this doesn’t mean you’re protected from other types of liability.
