Wal-Mart CEO Doug McMillon: Mobile Is Taking Over

Black Friday and Cyber Monday sales are out and it seems like brick and mortar giant, Wal-Mart Stores, Inc.WMT is now also giving tough competition to its online counterparts. Wal-Mart announced having sold more goods than ever on a single day this Cyber Monday.

Wal-Mart’s new CEO, Doug McMillon, gave his first live television interview after taking charge to CNBC on Wednesday, in which he talked about holiday sales and how mobile sales have now become an important aspect for retailers.

"I don’t get to talk about our results until the end of quarter, but I can maybe give some color on the themes […]. It is a incredible time of change in retail, there is a transformation going on. This move to e-commerce, the way e-commerce and stores work together, what’s happening with mobile. We knew, for example, this holiday, mobile would be really important for us, but it's been 70 percent of the orders that we have taken through our digital business," McMillon said.

"Mobile is a driving force in the countries we operate in today. We are in 27 countries and it's just a global phenomena on that mobile is taking over. For us, finding a way to bring these two things together is a tremendous opportunity."

McMillon also said 10 percent of mobile orders are coming when people are in a Wal-Mart store.

When asked about the kind of impact that lower gas prices are creating on Wal-Mart's business, McMillon replied, "Well customers are still under pressure, they've got a healthcare bill to pay, they need to pay down some debt, which is happening a little bit […] they shift around a little bit, but no doubt fuel prices are helping."
