Lean Hog Traders To Keep An Eye On Bitter Cold, Production
The weather in the Midwest will be bitter cold over the next few days and can have an impact on Hog feeding. However, the outlook shows moderating temperatures past this cold blast.
Chatter suggests much of the focus for lean hog traders will slowly move away from February hogs into other months. Last week, slaughter was above a year ago for the first time since last February. Weights were up over 4.5 pounds from a year ago. On average, the 2014 weights were up 8.5 pounds from 2013.
Due to the higher weights, pork production last week was down only a bit from a year ago. Loins and bellies were lower and ham prices were higher.
Pork Cut-Out was down 63 cents at mid-day. If the USDA reports are correct, slaughter for the first quarter of 2015 could be about the same as 2014.
