UAUA-LCC Merger Talks Break Down

US Airways Group Inc (NYSE: LCC) said today that it has ended its merger talks with United Airlines (NASDAQ: UAUA).

LCC made the announcement after rumors of UAUA and Continental Airlines Inc (NYSE: CAL) exchanging information as a prelude to a possible merger between these two carriers hit the markets.

According to industry experts, a merger between UAUA and CAL makes more strategic sense as these two carriers are already cooperating with each other. If this rumored merger takes place, it will result in the creation of the world's largest carrier.

US Airways CEO Doug Parker said in a memo to employees that although the carrier continues to believe in the merits of consolidation, it expects to remain as an independent carrier for the foreseeable future.

While UAUA has risen by 1.82% to $21.82, LCC’s shares have fallen by 3.85% to $6.50.
