“We’ve accepted mommy-wine culture; why can’t we do the same with cannabis?” says Rosie Mattio, the woman behind North America's largest cannabis PR firm. “As a high-functioning entrepreneur and mom to four daughters, I [proudly show up at my daughters’ school] in a weed T-shirt because it's time we challenge outdated stereotypes about who uses cannabis.”
Rosie’s early work reflects her ability to see opportunity where others saw barriers. Cannabis was still largely misunderstood, and few could have predicted the booming market it would become today. Drawing on her background in consumer packaged goods (CPG) PR, she recognized that the industry needed a champion to push it into the mainstream – and she was ready to be that trailblazer.
‘We Had To Fly Reporters To California’
In the beginning, the challenges were immense. Rosie wasn’t just working against an uninformed public, she was also battling a restrictive legal landscape. Traditional PR methods weren’t available: sending product samples across state lines was illegal – and still is, and it was nearly impossible to convince skeptical reporters to write about a product they hadn’t experienced firsthand. But Rosie was resourceful and creative.
One of her go-to strategies involved organizing media tours: “We had to fly reporters to California to show them what was happening in the industry, through farm tours, meetings, etc. For instance, I hosted a media tour for Canndescent in 2016, and it wasn’t until 2018 that the first mainstream story was written about them in Vogue.”
Breaking Into The Mainstream: When Efforts Garner Results
So, Mattio partnered with testing companies to show that regulated cannabis products were safe, in a push to restore consumer trust. “Our efforts, alongside those of other publicists, garnered global coverage including a segment on the Today Show,” she adds.
Even in the face of adversity, Rosie remained committed to pushing the cannabis narrative forward. She didn’t just focus on crisis management or getting media placements; she aimed to build brands that people could trust and relate to.
‘My Wife Is The Smartest Person In This Room; She Started A Cannabis Marketing Company’
Rosie’s rise from a one-woman operation to the head of the largest cannabis PR agency in North America wasn’t without its challenges. As the cannabis market grew, so did Mattio Communications. What began as a scrappy venture soon transformed into a major player, with Rosie at the helm, navigating an ever-changing legal and cultural landscape.
This ability to pivot was a key factor in the company’s growth. By late 2018, Rosie had hired her first employee and Mattio Communications was well on its way to becoming a full-fledged powerhouse. Today, the firm employs dozens of people and has offices in New York, Los Angeles and Toronto. But for Rosie, it wasn’t just about scaling for the sake of growth; it was about building a company that could drive the cannabis industry forward in meaningful ways.

“However,” Rosie adds, “I try to be intentional with my time during the evenings and weekends. I make a conscious decision to shut down after dinner for two hours to be fully present with my family. I also avoid making social plans on weekends to dedicate that time to my daughters and my husband.”
The future of Mattio Communications looks bright, but Rosie is clear that her mission is far from complete. “Looking ahead, we want to be recognized as pioneers and builders of this industry. In 20 years, we want to look back and see that we played a significant role in its development,” she says. For Rosie, the work she’s doing today isn’t just about PR: it’s about shaping the future of an industry that is still in its infancy.
Her words capture the essence of what has driven her success: passion, dedication and an unwavering belief in the potential of cannabis. These qualities have propelled her to the forefront of the industry, and it’s clear that she’s only just beginning.
