According to
Business Insider
, a recent poll from New Hampshire concluded that business mogul and reality TV star, Donald Trump, is now second in the Republican bid for President in 2012. Donald received 21% of the vote, second only to Mitt Romney, who has 27%. The other two Republican front-runners, Mike Huckabee and Newt Gingrich, each received 12%. Obama has plans to run for his second presidential term in 2012, which means if this Trump trend continues, he may have to go head-to-head with Donald. The race to the White House could get ugly due to recent concerns that Trump has had regarding President Obama. Trump's biggest issue thus far has been his contention that the President was not born in Hawaii, and therefore is not eligible to be/run for President. Obama endured intense scrutiny during and following the 2008 election for not releasing his full birth certificate, but accusations fizzled until just recently, thanks to Donald Trump. President Obama finally released his full birth certificate yesterday, begging the question: why now? Why not in 2008?
NPR
reports, “The president's lawyer flew to Honolulu and returned yesterday with two certified copies. Mr. Obama said he was worried the ongoing focus on his birthplace was becoming a distraction, making it harder for the country's leaders to tackle real problems like unemployment with a budget deficit.” The jury is still out on Trump's reaction to the unexpected birth record release, but it will be interesting to hear his response. Donald has a track record of instigating or aggravating quarrels with other high-profile celebrities, but going after the President is truly a bold move. Business Insider reports that Trump recently said that “Obama's presidency may be the ‘greatest scam' in the history of the United States.” If Donald Trump is being taken seriously as a Republican candidate, what is his platform besides smearing his competitors?
Forbes
interviewed Trump, asking if he was elected, what would be the first thing he would do as President. “The first thing I'd do is have a nice heart-to-heart talk with OPEC because the economy can never be strong if oil prices continue to go up. All these characters that are talking about projecting for the economy are wasting their time because every time the economy gets good they raise the oil prices. And mark my words: the economy can never be strong if OPEC is allowed to drain the blood out of us. So the first thing I'd do is have a heart-to-heart talk with OPEC — and it would not be a nice conversation.” “The second thing I'd do is have a nice heart-to-heart talk with China,” Trump added. “I would tax Chinese products in a nanosecond. And they will come to the table in less than a nanosecond.” It remains to be seen if Trump's candidacy will be taken seriously by Americans when it gets closer to the race. Trump isn't the only TV star that has attempted a presidential bid. It is worth noting that early in the 2008 Presidential race, Comedy Central TV star and host of ‘The Colbert Report,' Stephen Colbert, was attempting to get on both Republican and Democratic ballots. However, Colbert never made any ballot and discontinued his campaign. Trump may encounter the same presidential demise when it gets closer to campaign time. For now, he is in second place.
