While Google
GOOG may be a powerhouse in the world of internet search, its attempt at controlling the browser market has only just begun. The company marked the second anniversary of its Chrome browser by releasing an updated Version 6 for download.
As of the second quarter of this year, Chrome controlled just 7% of global browser users. Microsoft's
MSFT Internet Explorer controls 60%, and Mozilla's Firefox controls 24%. Apple's
AAPL Safari and Opera both control less than 5% each.
Despite the data, Google remains committed to becoming a web presence. The company has strong opinions about the way that Internet communications should work, and offering a free browser was just a piece of the puzzle.
According to an Engadget.com report, the new version offers "side-by-side view, themes, auto-translation, and bookmark and preference sync across machines."
Shares of Google are higher by $7.57, or $1.6%, to $470.75.
