Beyoncé And The Grammys: Always The Bridesmaid

On Sunday, Beyoncé scored Grammys No. 21 and 22, positioning her just six away from becoming the Awards’ most decorated female artist, but that didn’t ward off fans’ disappointment.

Despite a record-setting 62 nominations, including five Record of the Year and four Album of the Year, Queen Bee boasts only one win in the top three categories. “Single Ladies (Put a Ring on It)” took Song of the Year in 2010, but two other bids in the same class proved unsuccessful.

Beyoncé's lack of recognition may well be in her favor. She may yet join the ranks of some of the most memorable and widely celebrated artists notably overlooked for the music industry’s top awards.

As it is, she has already outpaced many musicians with proven staying power. Among enduring artists who failed to seize even one category win are:

• Bob Marley (two nominations, Lifetime Achievement Award).
• Diana Ross (12 nominations, two Hall of Fame Awards, Lifetime Achievement Award).
• Guns N’ Roses (three nominations).
• Jimi Hendrix (two Hall of Fame Awards, Lifetime Achievement Award).
• Notorious B.I.G. (four nominations).
• Public Enemy (five nominations).
• Queen (two nominations, two Hall of Fame Awards).
• The Ramones (one Hall of Fame Award, Lifetime Achievement Award).
• Run DMC (one nomination, Lifetime Achievement Award, Hall of Fame Award).
• Snoop Dogg (17 nominations).
• The Who (two nominations, 3 Hall of Fame Awards, Lifetime Achievement Award).
• Tupac Shakur (7 nominations).

Their music — not their noticeably absent accolades — cemented their fame and assured their immortality. Perhaps Beyoncé fans can find hope in that.
