South Jersey Industries (SJI), New Jersey Resources (NJR) Are Frontrunners In The Gas Utilities Sector

2009 proved to be good year for regulated transmission and distribution utilities like New Jersey Resources (NYSE: NJR), Northwest Natural Gas (NYSE: NWN), South Jersey Industries (NYSE: SJI) and Piedmont Natural Gas Company (NYSE: PNY). With low market risk coupled with above average returns, the sector is likely to remain attractive throughout the year 2010 as well.

The sector posted a 10% total return in the year 2009 with a median beta of 0.4. Since GDP growth and interest rates are expected to remain on the conservative side during the year 2010, a report released by Brean Murray has favored selective downstream utilities with high-return infrastructure projects. The report listed New Jersey Resources, Northwest Natural Gas, South Jersey Industries and Piedmont Natural Gas Company as its favorites.
