Google's Pixel and Pixel XL will be released on Thursday, and initial reviews are overwhelmingly positive. Cnet said that Google "stepped up to bat, called its shot and knocked it out of the park."

The Google designed, engineered and branded smartphone will set consumers back $649 and boasts impressive software features, including the voice-and-search service called Google Assistant.

Overall, Cnet rated the Pixel as one of the best Android phones in the market but falls short of the Samsung Galaxy S7 and S7 Edge. Needless to say consumers who are wary of Samsung won't find it much of a downgrade to select the Pixel.

Here is a summary of Cnet's key attributes for the new phone:

    1. Camera: Pixel's camera is fast, clear, colors look vibrant and takes better pictures than the iPhone 7 Plus.
    2. Integration with Google: Google Assistant is an artificial intelligence bot that makes use of machine learning and Google's own vast database to schedule reminders, look up facts, search for locations, set alarms, give directions and much more.
    3. Other Software: The Pixel runs a pure version of Android 7.1 called Nougat. The phone also includes messaging services such as Allo and a video calling app called Duo.
    4. Overall Feel: The Pixel is polished and well crafted with a more elegant touch compared to the Nexus devices.
