Is It Possible To Avoid The Next Brexit?

The people of Britain voted in a national referendum in late June to leave the European Union.

The vote, dubbed "Brexit," resulted in several political parties and activists across the European Union questioning the logic behind their own country's membership in the union.

Bloomberg View's Clive Crook, an Oxford and London School of Economics educated economist, stated in a video that Britain's decision to leave the European Union makes one thing perfectly clear — Europe needs to "rethink one of its core principles."

Crook continued that Europe needs to rethink the principle of free movement of goods, capital, services and people across member nations. He added that a certain degree of control pertaining to immigration problems need to be given back to individual countries.

Crook expanded that this freedom, specifically the freedom of movement of people, clashes with the legitimate rising fear of unverified, rushed and in many cases undocumented immigration which is fueling anti EU populism across the entire union.

"Voters everywhere feel that governments are ignoring them," Crook said. "This helps explain not just Brexit but the rise of parties like the National Front in France."
