William Blair More Confident Edwards' Durability Concerns Are Overdone

William Blair analysts, Ben Andrew and Alexa Desai, expressed more confidence on Edwards Lifesciences Corporation EW as they believe that the durability concerns were overdone based on Transcatheter Valve Therapies (TVT). The brokerage has an Outperform rating on the shares of the company.

William Blair noted that one of the hottest topics of the annual TVT conference was the durability due to the concerns of data presented at EuroPCR in May.

In a research note to clients, the brokerage expressed its opinion: "We walked away from the conference more confident that these concerns are overdone, based on new data presented and physician commentary, though this dynamic is one we will need to monitor as players in the space look to expand into lower-risk patients. Conclusions and Stock Thoughts Edwards' best-in-class valve products and compelling clinical evidence supporting TAVR should allow the company to retain share and broaden patient and physician acceptance of TAVR around the world."

The two analysts think that with the approval of expanded indications on the horizon, their view was that durability concerns were likely overblown and that they were confident in the company's capability to take share both domestically and internationally.

William Blair also pointed out two more factors in support of its argument. One was that the tone at TVT conference indicated that Physicians were not overly apprehensive about durability dynamic. The second factor is that there should be more data to draw conclusions about TAVR value durability as compared with surgical valve durability.

Shares of the company traded 0.23 percent up on Tuesday.
