Analysts have mixed expectations for
Amazon.com, Inc.AMZN
this quarter. "AWS will be very strong," Global Equities Research analyst Trip Chowdhry told Benzinga. "We're very optimistic on AWS business." Not all analysts have the same level of optimism. "Investors appear to not care, quarter-by-quarter, if Amazon makes a profit or not," Patrick Moorhead, president and principal analyst at
Moor Insights & Strategy
, told Benzinga. "What they do care about are big innovations." Moorhead said that
Amazon Prime
Now, the company's one-hour delivery service, is "working." The same cannot be said for the
Fire Phone
, which
flopped
when it was released last year. "Their phones have been a complete failure," said Moorhead. "I expect Amazon to lose money and unless Amazon can start showing traction in phones and video and music on demand, I don't see a rosy future."

'Off Quarter'

Another analyst said this was an "off quarter" for the whole retail space. "Therefore it looks like it's going to be an off quarter for Amazon," the analyst, who asked not to be quoted by name, told Benzinga. "It looks like their current subscribers are chugging along. They haven't done a lot of new deals to acquire content outside of originals. We'll have to see. It's an off quarter for retail, therefore it should be an off quarter for Amazon."

Primetime Sales

Sean Udall
, CIO of Quantum Trading Strategies and author of The TechStrat Report, told Benzinga that Prime Day (which will impact the September quarter) was a "brilliant move by Amazon." "My very first thought [was that] this is a great thing for Amazon to do to blow out a bunch of inventory they're probably sitting on," said Udall. "Amazon just basically had an online doorbuster special." Amazon will report its second quarter results on Thursday, July 23 after the market close. Disclosure:
