's top secret research lab called Google X is known to investors but
Facebook IncFB's own top secret lab isn't as well known and talked about.
According to
Recode, Facebook just acquired Nascent Objects, a small startup that offers a "modular electronics platform" which is a software program to help expedite the process for building physical gadgets.
Facebook's newly acquired entity will join its top-secret hardware lab, called Building 8, which is actually run by Regina Dugan who used to manage Google's advanced technology and products team which worked on 3-D mapping and modular smartphones.
Recode noted that the concept of a modular smartphone whereby users can add or remove components on demand has existed for quite some time but failed to take off. However, it is "unclear" what Facebook wants to build and why it needs Nascent Objects' technology and expertise to do so.
Recode added that Facebook didn't disclose terms of the acquisition but Nascent Objects' founder and CEO Baback Elmieh will join Facebook's team along with other key members of the startup.
However, Dugan offered a small hint of what the acquisition will bring to Facebook. On her
Facebook profile she posted a video which states "together, we hope to create hardware at a speed that's more like software."
