Netflix Vs. Social Media: By The Numbers

Netflix, Inc. NFLX is getting a ton of press before its earnings release Wednesday afternoon. Wall Street is talking, Main Street is hyped and even social media is getting on the bandwagon.

An interesting issue flying under the radar, though, is the exact reach of Netflix.

In the summer of 2014, the company's user base passed 50 million -- more than social media darlings like Vine, Meetup and ClassMates, for example.

But how does Netflix stack up next to the rest of the social media landscape?

Thanks to FindTheBest, there's an answer to that question.

As the chart indicates, Facebook Inc FB, LinkedIn Corp LNKD, Twitter Inc TWTR, Google Inc GOOG GOOGL's Google + and Yahoo! Inc. YHOO's Tumblr are all at least twice as large as Netflix's global user base. Facebook is a whopping 18 times bigger from this standpoint.

That's not the entire story, though.

When compared with other video streaming services, Netflix has an enormous advantage. Amazon.com, Inc. AMZN Prime/Instant Video and Hulu Plus combine for less than 25 million users. FindTheBest commented that these figures are, "admittedly weak representation of the industry- most companies are not transparent on their streaming-specific user base."

What's Next?

Netflix reports earnings in a few hours. Here's what the Street is watching in the meantime.
