In 2000, people could make a ton of money off of buying and selling specific website addresses. In 2016, people can make a ton off of money of Twitter Inc TWTR handles.

One Detroit-area woman decided to use her Twitter handle for the good of an entire community. Metro Times this week wrote about Diana Hussein, who used the handle @DietDrPepper for about seven years.

"I was taking a communication research class and 'wanted to check out this micro blog thing' and I made the handle @DietDrPepper because I had a can on my desk," she told Metro Times. Naturally, Dr Pepper Snapple Group Inc. DPS might be interested in that specific handle.

"We exchanged a few messages in 2013, but they stopped replying," Hussein told Benzinga. "I reached out to them again last year to no avail. It wasn't until January where they seemed to have a more deliberate interest in the handle."

Dr. Pepper offered Hussein company "swag" in exchange for the handle, but she had something different in mind.

"When I realized they also owned Dejá Blue bottled water, I figured I'd ask them to donate to Flint in lieu of swag," Hussein told Metro Times.

The company agreed and pledged to send $5,000 in bottled water to Flint, Michigan, which equates to 24 pallets, or roughly 41,000 bottles, according to Hussein. Metro Times said the water was delivered to the Food Bank of Eastern Michigan at the beginning of March.

Earlier this year, Flint's water crisis became national news. The city has had contaminated water since April 2014.

Dr Pepper Snapple didn't respond to requests for comment at time of publication.
