The foundation of its business is the efficient operation of pulp mills, converting fiber into paper grade, fluff and specialty pulps. In addition it is a marketer and producer of a broad line of incontinence care products marketed under the Attends brand names as well as baby diapers. The Company also owns and operates Ariva, a network of strategically located paper distribution facilities in Canada. It owns and operates Domtar Distribution Group, an extensive network of strategically located paper distribution facilities. It also produces lumber and other specialty and industrial wood products. The Company has two business segments namely Pulp and Paper and Personal Care. The Pulp and Paper segment comprises the design, manufacturing, sale and distribution of communication and specialty and packaging papers, as well as softwood, fluff and hardwood market pulp. Personal Care segment consists of the design, manufacturing, marketing and distribution of adult incontinence products, infant diapers and absorbent hygiene products. In the paper business the Company competes on the basis of product quality, breadth of offering, service solutions and competitively priced paper products. The pulp market is fragmented with many manufacturers. Competition is on the basis of access to low-cost wood fiber, product quality and competitively priced pulp products. Competition is along the line of four product categories-protective underwear, light pads, briefs and underpads with customers split between retail and institutional channels. Many of the brand name products are protected by registered trademarks. The key trademarks include Cougar, Lynx Opaque Ultra, Husky Opaque Offset, First Choice , Domtar EarthChoice , Attends , NovaThin , NovaZorb and Ariva. These brand names and trademarks have been registered in the United States and/or in other countries where the products are sold. The Company is subject to various general and industry-specific laws and regulations in the United States and other countries where it has operations, relating to the protection of the environment and natural resources. In particular, the pulp and paper industry in the United States is subject to the United States Environmental Protection Agency's Cluster Rules.
