United Fire Group Inc was incorporated in Iowa in January 1946. The Company is engaged in the business of writing property and casualty insurance and life insurance and selling annuities through a network of independent agencies. It operates in two business segments: property and casualty insurance and life insurance. The property and casualty insurance segment is comprised of commercial lines insurance, including surety bonds, personal lines insurance and assumed reinsurance. The life insurance segment is comprised of deferred and immediate fixed annuities, universal life insurance products and traditional life insurance products. The life insurance segment consists solely of the operations of United Life Insurance Company. The Company markets its products through its home office in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, and four regional locations: Westminster, Colorado, a suburb of Denver; Webster, Texas; Pennington, New Jersey; and Rocklin, California. The property and casualty insurance industry is highly competitive. It competes with numerous property and casualty insurance companies in the regional and national market, many of which are substantially larger and have considerably greater financial and other resources. The Company is subject to various state regulations requiring investment portfolio diversification.
