PC Connection Inc was founded in 1982. The Company is direct marketer of a range of information technology, or IT, solutions. It helps companies design, enable, manage, and service their IT environments. It provides IT products, including computer systems, software and peripheral equipment, networking communications, and other products and accessories that it purchases from manufacturers, distributors, and other suppliers. It also offers an extensive range of services involving design, configuration, and implementation of IT solutions. These services are performed by its personnel and by third-party providers. The Company operates through four segments, which serve primarily: small- to medium-sized businesses, or SMBs, through its PC Connection Sales subsidiary; large enterprise customers, in Large Account, through its MoreDirect and ValCom Technology or ValCom subsidiaries; federal, state, and local government and educational institutions, in Public Sector, through its GovConnection subsidiary; and consumers and small office/home office or Consumer/SOHO customers through its PC Connection Express division. The Company's principal target customers in SMB segment are small-to-medium-sized business customers. Under Public Sector Segment it uses a combination of outbound telemarketing, including some on-site sales solicitation by business development managers, and Internet sales through Internet Business Accounts, to reach these customers. In Large Account Segment, through its MoreDirect subsidiary's custom designed Web-based system, the Company is able to offer larger corporate customers an efficient and effective method of sourcing, evaluating, purchasing, and tracking a wide variety of IT products and services. MoreDirect generally places its product orders with manufacturers and/or distribution companies for drop shipment directly to its customers. The Company uses a combination of outbound elemarketing, including some on-site sales solicitation by field sales account managers, and Internet sales through Internet Business Accounts, to reach these customers. Through its GovConnection subsidiary, the Company targets each of the four distinct market sectors within Consumer/SOHO segment-federal government, higher educational institutions, school grades K-12, and state and local governments. PC Connection Express, Inc. focuses on the consumer and SOHO customer. The Company's primary means of marketing to these customers consists of Internet sales and inbound sales representatives. The Company generates sales mainly through outbound telemarketing and field sales contacts by account managers focused on the business, education, and government markets, its websites, and inbound calls from customers responding to its catalogs and other advertising media. The Company publishes a variety of catalogs, including PC Connection for the PC market, MacConnection for the Apple market, and PC Connection Express for the consumer market. It distributes catalogs to purchasers on its in-house mailing list as well as to prospective customers. In addition, it distributes specialty catalogs to educational and government customers and prospects on a periodic basis. The Company's specialty marketing activities include direct mail, other inbound and outbound telemarketing services, bulletin board services, package inserts, fax broadcasts, and electronic mail. The Company competes with other direct marketers of IT products, including CDW Corporation and Insight Enterprises, Inc. It also competes with certain product manufacturers that sell directly to customers, such as Dell Inc., as well as some of its own suppliers, such as HP, Lenovo, and Apple. The Company is subject to audits by states on sales and income taxes, unclaimed property, employment matters, and other assessments.
