Demand Media Inc was incorporated in Delaware in March 2006. It is a diversified digital content & media and domain name services company. The Company has developed an Internet-based model for the professional creation and distribution of high-quality content, and has recently expanded its commerce-based products and services. It also provides complete suite of products and services that its customers utilize as the foundation to build their online presence. It has recently started serving as a domain name registry and providing back-end registry services to a third-party domain name registry. The Company's business is comprised of two service offerings: Content & Media and Domain Name Services. Its Content & Media service offering includes an online content creation studio with a large community of freelance creative professionals, a portfolio of owned and operated websites, and a digital artist marketplace and e-commerce platform. Its differentiated approach to content creation is driven by consumers' desire to find specific information across the Internet. By listening to consumers and the signals that they send, it creates and delivers content that fulfills their needs. The Company deploys its proprietary content & media platform to its owned and operated websites, such as eHow.com, Livestrong.com and Cracked.com, and to websites operated by its customers. The Company also leverages its content creation studio for third-party brands, publishers and advertisers as part of its content solutions service offering. In June 2013, the Company acquired Society6, LLC ('Society6'), a digital artist marketplace and e-commerce platform that enables a large community of talented artists to sell their original designs on art prints, phone cases, t-shirts and other products. It also offers certain on-demand services for purchase on an a la carte or subscription basis, such as eHow Now, a platform where customers connect directly with experts to receive advice and guidance. Under the Domain Name Services segment, the Company provides domain name services that enable businesses and consumers to find, establish and maintain their digital address, the starting point for connecting with their online audience. Its registrar service offering provides domain name registration and various related services to its customers. The Company owns and operates Internet domain name registrar with approximately 15 million total domain names under management as of December 31, 2013. The Company launched its first seven gTLDs into the marketplace in the first quarter of 2014. Its content & media service offering generates revenue mainly through the sale of advertising, both on its owned and operated websites and on its customers' websites. The Company also generates revenue from the sale or license of content it creates for its customers and from the sale of select products and services offered through its commerce sites. The Company deploys it content & media service offering, including its content creation and distribution platform and its suite of social media tools, to website publishers, brands and advertisers. It also sells print-on-demand products through Society6 and its paid content directly to individual consumers. As of December 31, 2013, the Company has been granted 19 patents by the United States Patent and Trademark Office and has 26 patent applications pending in the United States and other jurisdictions. The Company competes with AOL, IAC, Yahoo!, Facebook, Twitter, Jive Software, among others.
