Cloud Peak Energy Inc was incorporated in Delaware on July 31, 2008 in anticipation of an initial public offering. The Company completed its initial public offering on November 9, 2009. The Company is a producer of coal in the U.S. and in the Powder River Basin, or PRB. The Company operates some of the safest mines in the coal industry. The Company operates in segments including Owned and Operated Mines and Logistics and Related Activities. The Owned and Operated Mines segment includes Antelope Mine, Cordero Rojo Mine, and Spring Creek Mine. Its Antelope and Cordero Rojo mines are served by the BNSF and UP railroads; and its Spring Creek Mine is served by the BNSF railroad. The Antelope Mine extracts thermal coal from the Anderson and Canyon Seams; Cordero Rojo Mine extracts thermal coal from the Wyodak Seam; and Spring Creek Mine extracts thermal coal from the Anderson-Dietz Seam. Its development projects include Youngs Creek Project, and Big Metal Project. The Logistics and Related Activities segment includes the services provided to international and domestic customers where it delivers coal to the customer at a terminal or the customer's plant or other delivery point, remote from its mine site. Its services include the purchase of coal from third parties or from its Owned and Operated Mines segment, at market prices, as well as the contracting and coordination of the transportation and other handling services from third-party operators, which are rail and terminal companies. The Company's mining operations are subject to extensive federal, state and local environmental, health and safety, transportation, labor and other laws and regulations.
