The US Department of Education reports that students who took online courses scored 10% higher than those who got extra instruction face-to-face. This is great news for eduFire, a San Francisco company that offers net based tutoring for students and entrepreneurs.
Founded by serial entrepreneur Jon Bischke, eduFire offers live lessons at low cost through text chats and video conferences. The range of classes is wide, covering conversational Spanish to the history of Iran. Students with similar interests can text chat and video for free, which stimulates great learning.
The company has so far attracted more than 50,000 registered users who pay around $29 per month. Roughly 10,000 of those people have taken a class in 2009. Bischke says that he pays 85% of his revenues to teachers, whereas universities pay just 15% to teachers. He says that this marketplace of courses will open the door to a huge range of experts who had never considered themselves educators.
