While homes for sale in Denver are getting snapped up in the space of a single day, the average Memphis homeowner is settling in for months of showings and hopeful calls from his real estate agent.

The average number of days homes stay on the market is falling across the nation, but stubborn regional pockets remain where homes take much longer to sell.

American homes are listed in the active market for an average of 53 days, according to May 2015 data from FindTheHome, representing a 5.36 percent decrease from a year ago.

May home sales are typically among the fastest of the year, as buyers with families prepare to sell their homes and move between school years.

Denver's hot real estate market and one-day sales average are the result of a year-long plunge of average time on market falling by 94.74 percent. On the other side of the country, homes in Allentown, Penn., are taking an average of 86.21 percent longer to move than a year ago.
