Announcement: Canadian Human Rights Commission

OTTAWA, ONTARIO--(Marketwire - March 12, 2010) - The Canadian Human Rights Commission (CHRC) congratulates the Government of Canada for its ratification of the United Nations' Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities and is pleased that this comes with the unanimous support of all the provinces and territories.

"This ratification was necessary to ensure that Canadian society recognizes the invaluable contributions of persons with disabilities and strengthens the momentum towards securing their equal rights," said CHRC Chief Commissioner Jennifer Lynch, Q.C.

Canada's record in advancing the rights of persons with disabilities is commendable, being one of the first countries to include disability rights in its Constitution. It is only fitting that Canada completed ratification of the Convention prior to the opening of the Paralympic Games in Vancouver. Over the next weeks, the world will focus on these extraordinary athletes competing for medals and celebrating the determination of the human spirit.

The Commission recognizes the critical role of Canada's community of persons with disabilities in achieving this important milestone. Their rallying motto Nothing About Us Without Us must continue to be heard as we move forward.

Now that the Convention is ratified the real work begins-making the rights to which Canada has now committed itself a reality in the day-to-day lives of the millions of Canadians who have a disability.

"In recent years, almost 35% of complaints have been related to this ground of discrimination," said Ms. Lynch. "We are working with partners to create a society that is inclusive and equitable, where employers and service providers integrate into daily practice accommodations to ensure the full participation of persons with disabilities. Ultimately, the successes of this ratification will relate to the degree to which the Convention rights are being enjoyed on the ground, not on how they appear on the page."

This Convention is the first to require the designation of an independent organization to monitor implementation. The CHRC has indicated to the government that it would welcome the opportunity to be involved in the implementation monitoring process.
