Vicky McPherson, shareholder in Greenberg Traurig's Africa Practice, moderated a panel discussion during the 2017 U.S.-Africa Business Summit hosted by the Corporate Council on Africa (CCA), June 16, 2017, in Washington, D.C.

The summit brought together business and government leaders to discuss the challenges of doing business in Africa and offer solutions for businesses looking to seize opportunities throughout the continent, as well as advocate for effective U.S.-Africa trade and investment policies.

McPherson moderated a trade panel titled, "A Fork in the Road for African Trade? Regionalization Versus Bilateral Trading Arrangement," which explored the effectiveness of regional integration across the African continent through regional economic communities.

Speakers included:

  • Ambassador Dr. Kipyego Cheluget, Assistant Secretary General, COMESA
  • Rosa Whitaker, President and CEO, The Whitaker Group
  • Temitope Iluyemi, Associate Director, Government Relations, Sub Sahara Africa, Proctor and Gamble
  • Stephen Lande, President, Manchester Trade
  • Witney W. Schneidman, Senior International Advisor for Africa, Covington and Burling

The focus on regional integration throughout the African continent was also highlighted by U.S. Secretary of Commerce Wilbur Ross during his address at the summit. The full text of his summit address can be found here. Secretary Ross also noted that more American businesses are pursuing projects throughout the entire continent, rather than just a few targeted markets and that, according to projections released this year, "six African nations are on pace to be among the top 10 fastest growing countries in the world."

Notably, African Development Bank President Dr. Akinwumi Adesina stated that most of the best performing countries on the African continent are the non-oil or non-commodity dependent economies. The full text of his summit remarks can be found here.
