SACRAMENTO, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--

The Sacramento Press Club will hear Lt. Gov. Gavin Newsom's thoughts on the November election at its Oct. 19 luncheon, and host a Presidential Debate Watch Party that evening.

The SPC is hosting a conversation with Newsom before he zeroes in on his run for governor in 2018. His current focus is on two measures on the November 2016 ballot to legalize recreational use of marijuana and tighten the state's gun laws for background checks and large-capacity ammunition magazines.

Never one to shy away from controversy, Newsom threw himself into the fight for marriage equality as mayor of San Francisco in 2004 by allowing more than 4,000 same-sex couples to marry in the city before the courts intervened. He also started a universal health care program in the city, set stringent environmental building standards and banned plastic bags and Styrofoam containers. The former television show host and business owner is also author of the book Citizenville: How to Take the Town Square Digital and Reinvent Government.

As lieutenant governor, Newsom serves as a University of California Regent, a Trustee for the California State University System, and a member of the State Lands Commission.

A few hours after the luncheon, the SPC will host a watch-party for the final Presidential Debate, as candidates Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump square off one last time before voters cast their ballot in the November election.

The debate watch party starts at 5 p.m. in the upstairs event space at BarWest, with the SPC providing complimentary appetizers. Rough & Tumble and the Capitol Morning Report are co-hosting the event. Ticket sales support the Sacramento Press Club's annual journalism scholarship program.
