Homeira Goldstein and TIME4ART to Present "A PEEK INTO CHICANO ART" a Year Ahead of Getty's $8.5 Million Exhibition for PST LA/LA Initiative

Homeira Goldstein and TIME4ART are thrilled to present A PEEK INTO CHICANO ART, an exhibition highlighting works by 14 Chicano artists from the private collection of actor, director, comedian, author, half of comedy duo "Cheech and Chong" and Chicano art collector Cheech Marin.

The exhibition will be held at the Manhattan Beach Art Center.

The 1960s marked the Chicano civil rights movement called El Movimiento, forwarding efforts for cultural recognition and national consciousness on issues including the socio-political status and awareness of Mexican-American communities focusing on history, culture, social, and equal opportunities. El Movimiento connected visual artists, poets, musicians, and dancers to political issues at hand.

By the mid-1970s, Chicano artists had become producers of visual culture in Chicano communities pursuing the vital tasks of creating art forms strengthening the will, invigorating the cultural identity, and clarifying the consciousness of the community. Chicano artists sought to demonstrate pride while empowering the community. The foremost aesthetic aim continued to be the search for an organic unity between actual social living and art. While the content and style of the murals and art forms were extremely varied, certain recurring themes did develop. One such theme was the reclamation of a lost indigenous past.

With medium from paper to glass, the artists featured in the show represent diversity in subject matter: from social urban, presence of individuals in the community, to political to pure aesthetic and landscape.

This exhibition is envisioned and produced by Homeira Goldstein, presented by TIME4ART, a non-profit art educational organization in Manhattan Beach, California, with a mission of enhancing cultural art awareness in the South Bay and Greater Los Angeles and supported by the Manhattan Beach Cultural Art Division.
