Old Car Festival in Greenfield Village Celebrates Centennial of National Park Service

On September 10 – 11, 2016, the grounds of Greenfield Village will be filled with more than 750 vehicles from the 1890s to 1932 that started America's love affair with the automobile during Old Car Festival, the country's longest-running antique car show.

On September 10 – 11, 2016, the grounds of Greenfield Village will be filled with more than 750 vehicles from the 1890s to 1932 that started America's love affair with the automobile during Old Car Festival, the country's longest-running antique car show. In honor of the centennial of the National Park Service, this year's event highlights the role the automobile played in the evolution of the parks and how motorists adapted the relatively new technology in order to explore the great outdoors.

For the National Park Service anniversary, The Henry Ford will be bringing out special vehicles that celebrate America's love for camping. The display includes the 1916 Packard Twin Six Camp Truck used by Henry B. Joy, Packard president and the first president of the Lincoln Highway, a 1922 Lincoln utility vehicle used by Henry Ford and the Vagabonds during their annual camping trips, and a vintage White Motor Company touring bus used at Yellowstone National Park from the Crawford Auto Aviation Museum in Cleveland, OH. Behind the Wright family home and Cycle Shop, guests can also see a special display with related items from The Henry Ford's Archive of American Innovation including a mid-1860s pocket compass used by American naturalist and conservationist John Muir and a vignette representing a Vagabonds' campsite complete with the scrapbook put together by John Burroughs from the group's 1916 trip through the Adirondacks and Green Mountains.

On Saturday morning, children of all ages are welcome to join the National Park Service during the Junior Ranger Swearing-In Ceremony at the review stage on Washington Boulevard and Main Street at 11 a.m. Guests can also learn more about the early days of roadside camping during a special presentation from historian Daniel Hershberger near the Scotch Settlement School at 1:30 p.m. and 3:00 p.m. Saturday and Sunday.

Throughout the weekend, guests can speak with the proud owners of the vehicles themselves, watch as the drivers show off their skills in early motor contests and witness the assembly of an actual Model T in minutes. On Main Street, guests can join The Henry Ford's Curator of Transportation, Matt Anderson along with automotive historians Marty Bufalini, Ross Hill, David Liepelt and Derek Moore as they provide information on the vehicles during the pass-in-review parades. On Saturday, Greenfield Village will be open until 9 pm for a special gaslight parade complete with a performance by the River Raisin Ragtime Revue starting at 7:00 p.m.
