Kevin Tenny of Leawood, Kan., Christopher Earnshaw of Manhattan, Kan. and Baily Smith of Garden City, Kan. are the 2016 Tortoise Young Entrepreneurs Scholarship Award recipients. The scholarships are designed to give deserving students a head start in their academic endeavors and encourage an entrepreneurial mindset that helps recipients conceive or support firms that create innovative products, processes and solutions.

Tortoise 2016 Young Entrepreneurs Scholarship Recipients

Kevin Tenny

Kevin Tenny is a senior at the University of Kansas (KU), majoring in chemical engineering, with certifications in tutoring, service-learning, global awareness, and research. During his time at KU, Kevin has interned with a private investment firm, contributed to multiple research labs across the country and published scientific and literary works. Kevin's entrepreneurial endeavors began before his time as a Jayhawk when he co-founded The Ten Ravis Tutoring Company the summer before his college freshman year. Since then, Kevin has followed his entrepreneurial drive by co-founding another start-up and numerous organizations at KU. Additionally, Kevin works as a teaching assistant for the Kansas Algebra Program, where he teaches a three-credit hour undergraduate math course. This past spring, Kevin was selected as a Barry M. Goldwater Scholar, among many other national accolades. Kevin plans to pursue a doctoral degree and aspires to coalesce his interests in engineering research, entrepreneurship, public policy and education as a university professor.

Christopher Earnshaw

Christopher Earnshaw is a senior at Kansas State University studying entrepreneurship. He inherited his entrepreneurial spirit from his father at a young age, pursuing involvement in start-up, entrepreneurial efforts at every turn. He spent the past two years working for the Global Orphan Project in the sales department and developing GOEX, a young apparel start-up dedicated to employing men and women at a living wage in Port Au Prince, Haiti and closer to home in the Kansas City, Mo. area. He is a member of the Venture Accelerator group and National Strategic Selling Institute at Kansas State, and plans to graduate a semester early in December 2016. Chris is driven by a mission to serve others and aspires to work in the social business sector in a sales, product development or business development position.

Baily Smith

Baily Smith will soon begin her freshman year at Kansas State University where she will study dietetics, and endeavor to earn a Registered Dietitian certification. Her love of running inspired her first entrepreneurial pursuit, Rainbow Run GC, a color run based in Garden City, Kan. Her objective: bring a big city event to a small town at a reasonable price. In her senior year of high school she joined the youth entrepreneurs program, further developed her entrepreneurial spirit and took third place at a regional business plan competition. Ultimately she plans to help inspire America to get healthy.

About Tortoise Young Entrepreneurs Scholarship Program

The Tortoise Young Entrepreneurs Scholarship Program was established in 2012 in celebration of Tortoise Capital Advisors' 10-year anniversary. The program recognizes the challenges and rewards of the entrepreneurial spirit and encourages the next generation of curious, persistent and passionate entrepreneurs. The Tortoise Young Entrepreneurs Scholarship Program awards three annual, non-renewable scholarships valued at $3,000, $2,000 and $1,000. Applicants must (i) be a resident of Kansas or Missouri (Tortoise Capital Advisors' headquarters borders these two states) who attends or plans to attend a full-time undergraduate course of study toward a bachelor's degree, or (ii) be a full-time student seeking a bachelor's program at a Kansas or Missouri accredited university or college. All applicants must also meet certain academic and college entrance exam scores.
