Milton Hershey School Music Teacher and Houseparents Honored with National Residential Education Awards

Catherine Hershey awards honor outstanding staff, students and supporters in residential education

HERSHEY, Pa. (PRWEB) April 29, 2016

A Milton Hershey School® music teacher and houseparent couple recently were selected for Catherine Hershey Awards at the 2016 Coalition for Residential Education (CORE) National Conference in Washington, D.C.

"Milton Hershey School is honored to work with CORE to help spread the message that residential excellence can help children lead brighter futures," said MHS Head of Elementary Division and CORE Chair Emeritus Annette Cole-Gill. "We are pleased that MHS staff is being recognized with these prestigious awards for their hard work in helping underprivileged children succeed."

CORE honored MHS Music Teacher Cristal Sheaffer with the Catherine Hershey Educator of the Year Award. Sheaffer directs the New Horizons choir group and has inspired many MHS students to get involved with the visual and performing arts.

CORE also honored MHS houseparents Craig and Dianna Cowan with the Catherine Hershey Houseparents of the Year Award. The Cowans have been instrumental in creating nurturing, home-like environments for students in the residential school setting. They provide support to help students achieve academic, physical, and social and emotional success.

"MHS is extremely proud of Cristal, Craig and Dianna for being honored with these awards," said MHS Associate Director of Elementary Home Life and CORE Vice-Chair Tom Robinson. "Their dedication to the School's mission and the impact they are making on students' lives have made a profound effect on so many students and our community."

The Catherine Hershey awards honor staff, students and supporters whose contributions exemplify the essence of residential education. Honorees display dedication, compassion and positivity that provide low income students with the opportunities to navigate a solid course in career, relationships and in life.
