OrthoArizona - Arizona Orthopaedic Associates (AOA) is expanding its arthritis-related services and treatments.

In response to the added need for arthritis treatment projected by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) in a National Health Interview Survey (NHIS) that estimates a future arthritis burden related to an aging U.S. population, OrthoArizona - Arizona Orthopaedic Associates (AOA) is expanding its arthritis-related services and treatments.

The Phoenix-based orthopedic group will offer consultations with board-certified orthopedic surgeons with extensive training and experience. The group can provide treatment and work with pre- or post-surgical conditions including arthritis, joint pain, back pain, neck pain and more. The group's physical therapy department also employs The ASTYM System and Fascial Distortion Model (FDM).

By 2040, 78 million Americans will have doctor-diagnosed arthritis, an increase of nearly 48 percent. Those most affected will be women, who are expected to represent two-thirds of all cases.

Forty-four percent of adults currently diagnosed report activity limitations related to arthritis.

To spread awareness and support arthritis research, communities around the nation are hosting the Arthritis Foundation's Walk to Cure Arthritis, a 5K event that raises money for research aimed at finding a cure. Arizona's 2016 Walk to Cure Arthritis will take place at the Phoenix Zoo Saturday, April 30.

"Arthritis is a painful and debilitating disease," said David M. Ott, MD, an AOA board-certified orthopedic surgeon and president of the Phoenix-based practice. "It's important to get treatment when symptoms first start. The sooner a diagnosis is made, the sooner a patient can begin a course of treatment that can help lessen pain and discomfort."

With more than 100 different types of arthritis, signs and symptoms of arthritis vary, but often include pain and tenderness of the joints, stiffness, loss of flexibility, a grating sensation when bending the joint, and bones spurs, which are bone growths that form around affected joints when cartilage is lost.

The board-certified orthopedic surgeons at AOA offer advanced diagnostic techniques to accurately diagnose arthritis. Evaluation methods include x-rays, blood tests and fluid analysis, biopsy, Lyme serology and other, advanced diagnostic methods.  

"Arthritis can be a disabling disease that can make everyday tasks a challenge," Ott said. "Although there is no cure, it's our first priority to provide each patient with quality arthritis care and treatment so they can lead more healthy and active lifestyles."
