Association of Women Surgeons Reacts to New Study on Pay Parity
The Association of Women Surgeons is committed to pay parity for all Surgeons. The 2016 Medscape General Surgeon Compensation Report shows a 24% pay gap between male and female surgeons in full time practice. On average, female surgeons earned $257,000 while male surgeons were paid $340,000 in 2015. This pay disparity costs women and their families $700,000 to $2,000,000 over the course of their career.
The Association of Women Surgeons is committed to educating and advocating on issues of pay parity as part of our core mission to engage, empower, and excel with our membership. We want all women surgeons who believe in pay equity to engage by joining AWS. Membership empowers our efforts to make pay parity in surgery a reality. To highlight the disparity, the Association of Women Surgeons will reduce the cost of a regular annual membership for new members who join in the month of May by 24%.
