Organizations Urge Candidates to Include Family Recovery in Addressing Addiction

Washington, D.C. (PRWEB) February 13, 2016

The National Association for Children of Alcoholics (NACoA) joined with Faces and Voices of Recovery, the leading national organization representing the growing community of recovering individuals (now over 23 million), to issue a position paper urging candidates for public office to include Family Recovery in policies addressing addiction.

Although many of the presidential candidates of both parties have recognized addiction as a national issue, seldom does the impact of alcoholism and drug addiction on the family get much attention. Candidates have given little focus to recovery for the family impacted by addiction.

"Our organizations are urging all candidates for public office to include the other victims of addiction—the silent suffering children and families struggling to survive and control the chaos in their families. They also need to heal from the destruction of this devastating disease," said Sis Wenger, NACoA president and CEO.

"The 2016 theme for National Recovery Month is JOIN THE VOICES FOR RECOVERY: OUR FAMILIES, OUR STORIES, OUR RECOVERY," said Wenger. "In keeping with this theme, we are asking our nation's leaders to fight for critical measures to assist the impacted families in their communities."

The National Association for Children of Alcoholics—the Voice for the Children—is the oldest national membership and affiliate non-profit organization committed to eliminating the adverse impact of alcohol and drug use on children and families. For 33 years, NACoA has been raising awareness about the issues facing these children by advocating for policy change, advancing prevention services, and training professionals who work with children. Through its programs and services, NACoA brings hope, health and healing to children in need.
