BBB®'s involvement with NCSAM continues to grow

Fort Worth, Texas (PRWEB) October 01, 2015

Today marks the official start of the 12th Annual National Cyber Security Awareness Month (NCSAM). In 2004, President Obama designated the month of October as NCSAM with the goal of raising awareness about cyber security and increasing the resiliency of the nation in the event of a cyber incident. NCSAM was designed to engage and educate both public and private sector partners through events and initiatives.

NCSAM is formally recognized by Congress, federal, state and local governments and leaders from within the cyber security industry and academia. This united effort is necessary to maintain a safer, more resilient cyberspace. Based on a national survey of online behaviors and attitudes for the National Cyber Security Alliance; 96% of Americans feel a personal responsibility to be safer and more secure online. The survey also found that 90% said they want to learn more about keeping safer on the internet.

The Council of Better Business Bureaus® (CBBB) is a licensed partner for the National Cyber Security Alliance's (NCSA) program entitled Stop.Think.Connect., a global cybersecurity awareness campaign to help all digital citizens be safer and more secure online. Along with those supporting organizations Better Business Bureau® of Fort Worth and Tarrant County, Inc. urges all local consumers and businesses to take action and help make our digital community more secure and more trusted. A few tips to always keep in mind for cyber security:

  •     Set strong passwords and don't share them
  •     Keep your browser, operating system and software optimized by installing updates
  •     Have an open dialogue about internet safety
  •     Limit personal info you post online and use privacy settings
  •     Be cautious about what you read and receive online

Your BBB® also encourages to take advantage of our free livestream on October 20, 2015. The Metro NY BBB® Foundation is collaborating with BBB® Wise Giving Alliance to present a free Internet livestream of a workshop program entitled Cybersecurity Planning for Nonprofit Leaders. While this livestream focuses primarily on nonprofits it also has useful information for all business owners including how to detect a cybersecurity problem and how to respond effectively to a cybersecurity incident.
