Sandi Burke, PhD, ANP, BC, FAAN, has been named academic chair for the Bachelor of Science in nursing upper division program and the director of the west campus site at Goldfarb School of Nursing at Barnes-Jewish College.

Sandi Burke, PhD, ANP, BC, FAAN, has been named academic chair for the Bachelor of Science in nursing upper division program and the director of the west campus site at Goldfarb School of Nursing at Barnes-Jewish College. Burke joined the college in July and brings with her an expansive career in nursing, education and research.

Most recently Burke served as the director of the Urbana Regional Campus at the University of Illinois at Chicago College of Nursing and as a clinical associate professor in the Department of Biobehavioral Health Science. Burke has also taught at several nursing colleges including Illinois State University and Indiana State University. Along with her teaching credentials, Burke's area of scholarship is focused on the care of older adults with diabetes in long-term care.

"Dr. Burke is a nationally recognized nurse with extensive experience as a clinician, educator and researcher," said Gretchen Drinkard, PhD, RN, CNE, Jack Taylor senior associate dean for academic affairs and professor at Goldfarb School of Nursing at Barnes-Jewish College.

She added, "Dr. Burke's prominence in the field of diabetes education will benefit our students, faculty and the whole Goldfarb community. We are extremely fortunate to have her join our efforts."

Upon completion of her Bachelor of Science in nursing from Indiana State University, she worked as a nurse in various clinical settings, including in the intensive care unit, as a family planning nurse practitioner, diabetes program coordinator, nursing instructor and nurse practitioner diabetes specialist. Burke completed her doctoral work at the University of Illinois in Chicago, where her dissertation earned her a PhD in nursing science.

Burke's professional affiliations include membership in the American Academy of Nursing, American Nurses Association, Illinois Society for Advanced Practice Nurses, Sigma Theta Tau International and the Midwest Nursing Research Society. She is a member of the American Diabetes Association, a past president of the board of the American Association of Diabetes Educators and was the vice chair of the Older Adult Work Group of the National Diabetes Education Program.
