New Line of Native American Pottery Arrives From Acoma Tribe

Acoma pottery has been dated back to more than 1,000 years ago. Using local ingredients and traditional methods, Acoma pottery is a one-of-a-kind treasure that speaks volumes of poignant history and artistry. The Acoma tribe has endured centuries of war, raids by neighboring tribes, Spanish conquest, and tribal mixing. Yet their unique pottery has stood out amongst a history marred with strife. The Acoma use clay that is locally dug and mixed with pulverized pottery to create each piece. Each piece is painted using a unique design of split sections covered in geometric patterns. Thunderbirds and rainbows are also designs used in traditional Acoma pottery.

Before the pottery is fired, each piece is tapped with the spike of a yucca. This technique causes a ringing sound to appear inside the pottery, if it does not ring then the piece will most likely crack during the firing process. Acoma artisans will break this piece apart to use in another.

"Our collection features the geometric patterns often found in Acoma pottery," explains NativeAmericanJewelry.com spokesperson Steven Onida. "The beautiful almost white clay allows the bold reds and blacks to stand out in the hand crafted paintings."

The pottery created by the Acoma tribe is shaped into both traditional and non-traditional vase styles. From the wide mouthed vase to the scalloped edge vase, the shape of each piece combined with the unique painting details make each piece one-of-a-kind.

Also created by the Acoma are fetishes in both pot and vase form. "We currently feature pottery work from artist Yolanda Paytiamo. She does feature a few bear fetishes that are exquisitely crafted and beautifully painted," adds Onida.

With a history that can often paint a painful picture, the Acoma have risen above their past to paint stunning works of art set in clay.
