Mimi Guarneri, MD, FACC, president of the Academy of Integrative Health and Medicine (AIHM) and award-winning La Jolla, California physician specializing in cardiology and integrative holistic medicine, is ranked as the top U.S. female integrative medicine physician by Newsmax Health on May 27, 2015. Ranked as number six out of the top 100 physicians in integrative medicine, she joins Mehmet Oz, MD; Mark Hyman, MD; Deepak Chopra, MD; Andrew Weil, MD and Michael Roisen, MD at the top. Board-certified in cardiovascular disease, internal medicine, nuclear medicine and holistic medicine, Dr. Guarneri is unique among her peers. By helming the AIHM, creating a successful integrative private practice as a model and personally guiding large healthcare systems to develop integrative centers and embrace integrative holistic approaches, she is leading the US journey through the evolving healthcare landscape.

As founding president of the AIHM, she is guiding its global development. The AIHM is building a collaborative membership of healthcare professionals and health seekers, educational initiatives, certification, leadership training, research and advocacy for all global healing traditions that promote the creation of health and the delivery of evidence-based comprehensive, affordable, sustainable person-centered care. She is past president of American Board of Integrative Holistic Medicine (ABIHM), where she recognized the need for an academy to serve and educate a broader demographic. This new organization, founded through ABIHM in 2014, is helping to catalyze the shift toward integrative medicine.

Her new integrative center, Guarneri Integrative Health, Inc. at Pacific Pearl La Jolla in San Diego County, has introduced a unique membership model combining MDs with naturopathic doctors (NDs) and internal medicine, cardiology and psychology. It features a comprehensive assessment with an MD/ND team and providers for acupuncture, healing touch, massage, bodywork, hypnotherapy and skincare, among others. Pacific Pearl La Jolla also houses the unique Taylor Wellness Studio, a learning space fully-equipped for video production. The studio is where Dr. Guarneri holds lectures and workshops, tapes interviews and programs, and rents use to outside groups. Pacific Pearl La Jolla, which opened in 2014, has become a model for physicians.

Dr. Guarneri continues to guide the evolution of large healthcare systems across the US. In 2014, she became senior advisor to the Atlantic Health System (AHS) for the Center for Well Being and Integrative Medicine. At AHS last year, she helped launch The Chambers Center for Wellbeing, their new integrative center in Morristown, NJ. Among her current projects, she has expanded integrative healthcare into the US Veterans Health Administration (VA) by teaching and training the hospital staff at the VA Greater Los Angeles Healthcare System – the largest and most complex within the Department of Veterans Affairs.

Her first integrative center was with Scripps Health in La Jolla. She founded the Scripps Center for Integrative Medicine in 1999 and served as medical director for 15 years. Dr. Guarneri began her career at Scripps Clinic as an attending in interventional cardiology, where she placed thousands of coronary stents. Recognizing the need for a more comprehensive and more holistic approach to cardiovascular disease, she pioneered the Scripps Center for Integrative Medicine (SCIM). At SCIM, state-of-the-art cardiac imaging technology and lifestyle change programs are used to aggressively diagnose, prevent and treat cardiovascular disease.

Highly sought as a speaker and advisor, Dr. Guarneri's awards include the 2011 Bravewell Physician Leadership Award and ARCS Foundation's 2009 Scientist of the Year Award among others. She authored "The Heart Speaks: A Cardiologist Reveals the Secret Language of Healing," 2006, and is co-author of "Total Engagement: The Healthcare Practitioner's Guide to Heal Yourself, Your Patients and Your Practice," 2014. Her DVD set, "The Science of Natural Healing," is 24 of her lectures in a series from The Great Courses®. Full book and lecture descriptions are on the Pacific Pearl La Jolla website under Innovative Education. She has contributed to several other books and published in numerous peer-reviewed journals and publications.
