Boca Raton, FL (PRWEB) May 29, 2015

Wimbledon Health Partners, the leading on-site diagnostic testing organization which provides vascular, electrocardiogram (EKG), echocardiogram and NCV testing, is proud to announce the implementation of the most recent guidelines for EKG interpretation of athletes.

Sudden cardiac death (SCD) is the leading cause of death during athletic activity. New findings presented in February have played an important role in the continued discussion to improve cardiac safety in athletes. Physiologic adaptations in athletic individuals are well known to have effects on cardiac electrical conduction.

According to Jonathan Drezner M.D., creator of the ‘Seattle Criteria,' physicians responsible for the cardiovascular care of athletes must be guided by EKG interpretation standards that distinguish normal EKG findings in athletes from EKG abnormalities requiring additional evaluation to reduce the likelihood of false-positives. In 2013, Dr. Drezner presented criteria to reduce the frequency of false-positive EKG readings in athletes from 20 percent down to 5 percent, and the most recent criteria, improved that rate to 4 percent.

"Opponents of EKG exams have always cited the previously high false-positive rate when disputing the implementation of mandatory testing of student-athletes," said Dr. Artel, "The utilization of
Dr. Drezner's criteria has now decreased that rate to the point where this argument is inconsequential."

Wimbledon Athletics teams up with high schools, amateur sport associations, and any other athletic organizations nationwide that want to assess the heart health of their athletes. Wimbledon U, exclusively offers colleges and universities on-site comprehensive cardiac testing.
