Dr. Ferdinand Valentine, born in 1851, was ranked as the best in his speciality, Genito-Urinary diseases. He was a man of rare and attractive personality who practiced medicine, specifically in the field of urology. Not only did he devote his life to his profession and practice for the good of his fellow man, he was known for the new methods and procedures he introduced for the permanent healing of chronic conditions that affected those organs.

In his honor the Valentine Family created the Valentine Award to celebrate his many contributions to medicine. Each year the New York Academy of Medicine presents this award to the doctor that exemplifies the qualities and contributions to medicine in the field of urology.

It should come as no surprise that Dr. Jerry Blaivas received the 2015 the prestigious Ferdinand C. Valentine Award for his outstanding contributions in this field.

Jerry G. Blaivas, MD, FACS is an internationally renowned urologist, researcher and innovator. Dr. Blaivas was one of the originators of urodynamics, founded the not-for-profit organization The Institute for Bladder and Prostate Research, and pioneered many of the current surgical procedures to correct stress incontinence, urinary fistulas, urethral diverticulum, overactive bladder and neurogenic bladder.

He is one of the few surgeons who routinely performs reconstructive surgery for prolapse and incontinence without the use of mesh, and has published one of the largest series in the world on treatment of mesh complications. He has a particular interest and expertise in complex urologic problems – complications of radiation and prostate surgery, failed incontinence surgery and failed prolapse surgery.

Dr. Blaivas was the first person ever to recommend non-mesh slings as the standard treatment for stress incontinence in women. He pioneered this treatment and is the primary author of one of the largest series ever published on this operation.

In addition, he is the author of a book for the lay public on bladder and prostate conditions entitled, Conquering Bladder and Prostate Problems; an Authoritative Guide for Men and Women. He is Clinical Professor of Urology at Weill Cornell Medical College, Adjunct Professor at SUNY Downstate and Attending Surgeon at New York Presbyterian Hospital and Lenox Hill Hospital. He is former Professor of Urology and Vice Chairman of the Department of Urology at Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons.

Dr. Blaivas is the Founder of the major scientific journal Neurourology & Urodynamics and was Editor-in-Chief for 25 years. He has is the author of over 400 peer reviewed scientific articles, book chapters and reviews. He is the recipient of countless awards, including the Lifetime Achievement Award from the Society for Urodynamics and Female Urology, the Victor A. Politano Award from the American Urological Association, the F. Brantley Scott M.D. Award from the American Foundation for Urologic Disease, the J. Marion Sims Award from the American Uro-Gynecologic Society and the Paul Zimskind Award from the Urodynamic Society.
