Proven online tutoring and data analytics increases student learning opportunities and enhances retention rates

NEW YORK, Jan. 30, 2015 /PRNewswire/ -- Tutor.com, the leading online tutoring service, announced that Penn State World Campus, a pioneer in online learning, will offer Tutor.com's award-winning tutoring and data analytics to students in all 50 states, more than 40 countries and 7 continents.

For the first time, students at Penn State World Campus will have access to personalized, one-to-one learning 24/7 from more than 3,000 tutors in over 40 subjects ranging from Math and Economics to Science and Nursing. Each live, online session focuses on the student's needs and questions and is archived, including images, lesson transcripts and tutor feedback. For students, the direct connection to a live tutor and access to recorded learning sessions provides a personalized approach that builds confidence and helps them succeed.

Faculty at Penn State World Campus will have access to Tutor.com's robust data analytics platform, known as Predictive Insights™, to help inform decisions and provide crucial information for student success and retention. Faculty will be able to review detailed reports on individual student strengths and needs, subject areas, objectives and trend data across cohorts and classes. Unlike any other reporting system, Predictive Insights provides reports to help faculty identify curricular and instructional-design issues, as well as spot at-risk students in a timely manner to provide support.

"With more than 11 million learning engagements conducted over the past 14 years, we feel that our approach to personalized learning through live tutoring is effective for colleges and universities looking to improve student success and persistence," said Sandi White, General Manager of Institutional Programs. "Our learning and data services help fulfill the mission of Penn State World Campus to help every student access a quality academic experience in a scalable and affordable way."

Through an ongoing 18-month efficacy study conducted by Noel-Levitz, the Tutor.com methodology was proven to significantly impact student success and retention. The initial report found:

  • Students in Tutor.com sessions were more likely to earn A, B or C grades, 18-23 percentage points more than comparable students who did not use Tutor.com sessions.
  • Students using Tutor.com were more likely to persist, with 86% of students using Tutor.com services re-enrolling the following semester compared with 69% of non-users.
  • Students using Tutor.com were more likely to be enrolled full-time.
