HOUSTON, Dec. 18, 2014 /PRNewswire/ -- Spectra Energy Corp's SE New Jersey-New York Expansion Project recently was recognized as the 2014 Premier Construction Project during the Platts Global Energy Awards gala in New York City. The award recognizes excellence in project execution and management.

The New Jersey-New York pipeline, an extension of Spectra Energy's Texas Eastern Transmission and Algonquin Gas Transmission systems, was placed into service in November, 2013, and was the first new natural gas pipeline into New York City in more than 40 years. Customers in the region are expected to save an estimated $700 million annually thanks to the additional supply of clean-burning, domestic natural gas.

"We gained tremendous knowledge and experience in developing the New Jersey-New York project – lessons that we're applying to our expansion projects across North America," said Bill Yardley, Spectra Energy's president of U.S. Transmission and Storage. "Because of the excellent work of our employees and contract workforce, and our collaboration with stakeholders across the region, the New Jersey-New York project is delivering on its promise of providing affordable, efficient, and clean-burning energy to the region, and as the award judges noted, proves Spectra Energy's 'mastery of large, complex projects.'"

The project, one of the most complicated and demanding in the company's history, was completed on schedule while minimizing impacts to residents, remaining sensitive to archeological sites, and ensuring the safety of employees and the community.

"The Platts Global Energy Awards honor organizations and individuals who are dedicated to achieving excellence. Given the key role the energy industry plays in the global economy and its impact on society, we believe those who are committed to addressing the industry's most pressing issues and uncovering its greatest opportunities deserve high praise for their positive contributions," said Larry Neal, president of Platts.
