Fisher Nuts Helps Feed 400,000 Texas Families this Holiday Season through $40,000 Donation to Feeding Texas

SELMA, Texas, Nov. 20, 2014 /PRNewswire/ -- Community members across Texas came together on November 18 for the Fisher® Shares & Cares Volunteer Night to help package holiday meals at local food banks. More than 350 volunteers in San Antonio, Dallas, Houston, Amarillo and Abilene helped pack 54,955 pounds of food that will be delivered to families in need in time for Thanksgiving. For the third consecutive year, Fisher® Nuts announced a donation to Feeding Texas (formerly known as the Texas Food Bank), which will help feed 400,000 families this holiday season.

John B. Sanfilippo & Son, Inc., owner of the Fisher Nuts brand, made this year's $40,000 donation to Feeding Texas to support fellow Texans during the holiday season. Leading up to the Fisher Shares & Cares Volunteer Night, high schools in San Antonio, Houston and Dallas collected 7,755 pounds of non-perishable canned goods at the schools' football games.

"The Fisher Shares & Cares campaign is a great opportunity for us to support the state that Fisher Nuts has called home for more than two decades," said Nick Sharma, Selma plant operations manager for John B. Sanfilippo & Son, Inc. "We're thankful for the support of students and community members across Texas to help promote the volunteer night and collect food items for those in need this holiday season."

In 2013, Feeding Texas member food banks distributed enough food for 270 million meals, nourishing over three million Texans through a statewide network of 3,000 soup kitchens, food pantries and local agencies. The organization also helps food banks by managing statewide food sourcing and purchasing programs, offering expert technical assistance and training, and spreading food bank innovations and best practices statewide.

"With the holidays just around the corner, we're grateful to have the support of Fisher Nuts for a third year," said Celia Cole, chief executive officer at Feeding Texas. "It is great to see communities and schools across the state coming together and dedicating their time for such a great cause."
