MIAMI--(BUSINESS WIRE)--

Ryder System, Inc. R, a leader in commercial fleet management and supply chain solutions, today announced that it was named a 2014 Green Supply Chain Award winner by Supply & Demand Chain Executive (SDCE). The Green Supply Chain Awards recognize companies making green or sustainability a core part of their supply chain strategy and working to achieve measurable sustainability goals within their own operations and/or supply chains. Ryder has received the award for six years now.

“Ryder offers a range of fleet and supply chain solutions that help customers improve efficiencies and reduce environmental impacts,” said Ryder President of Global Supply Chain Solutions, John Williford. “We are proud to be recognized again for helping our customers achieve their business and sustainability goals.”

Advanced fuel solutions are one area where Ryder's impact is evident. The Company is the leader in natural gas vehicle solutions for the commercial transportation industry, with more than 27 million miles of experience, 14 natural gas vehicle maintenance facilities, and 260 natural gas vehicle trained technicians. Ryder has deployed Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) and Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) vehicles into the fleets of Ryder customers in California, New York, Michigan, Texas, Arizona, Utah, Maryland, Georgia and Louisiana as well as in Canada. The Company operates Liquefied to Compressed Natural Gas (LCNG) fuel stations at its Fontana and Orange, Calif., service locations. Ryder also operates an LNG fuel station at its Fulton, Ga. maintenance facility.

Ryder engages with customers to help them “green” their supply chains by focusing on carbon reduction in three critical areas: network design, facilities and building use, and transportation. By designing a supply chain network with the reduction of the carbon footprint as one of our primary focuses, Ryder advises customers on factors such as the location of distribution centers, miles to be traveled, amount of inventory, and size and number of facilities included in the network. For the use of buildings and facilities, Ryder offers lighting efficiencies, cutting-edge energy technologies, alternative use of by-products, and other strategies to reduce waste and carbon emissions. In transportation, customers are not only able to take advantage of Ryder's engineering expertise optimizing shipments, routes, and modes, but can also tap into Ryder's industry leading natural gas vehicle program.

Supply & Demand Chain Executive received almost 100 entries for the 2014 Green Supply Chain Award. Submissions were judged based on the clarity and content of the goals and strategy, the extent of the steps being taken, the impact of the results to date and projected results, and the form and presentation of the information submitted. Honored companies are recognized in the areas of Sourcing/Procurement, Fulfillment/Logistics, Operations, Product Lifecycle Management, and other areas of the supply chain. The awards also spotlight providers of supply chain solutions and services, such as Ryder, that assist their customers in achieving measurable sustainability goals.
