Harbor Village Florida comments on study finding differences in alcoholism risk among Hispanic community

USA (PRWEB) October 30, 2014

As reported by the Latin Times in the article Hispanic Drinking Habits: New Study on Alcoholism Highlights Why Racial Category is Too Diverse to Group (10/21), a recent study on alcoholism and Hispanics has revealed some interesting findings. The study, completed by Michigan State University, found that the risk of alcoholism varies within subgroups of the Hispanic population. Using per-existing data, the study watched trends in national alcohol-related disorders between Mexican-Americans, Cuban Americans, and Puerto Ricans, all of which pointed to different results. Researchers believe that the differences are due to migration and lifestyle. They believe that the national results do not take those differences into account.

Interestingly, the study also finds that Hispanics overall are more likely to have a higher risk of alcoholism even though some of the subgroups don't fall into that trend. For example, the rate of alcohol-related disorders for Cuban Americans is less than one percent. Researchers believe this may be due to the fact that Cuban Americans thrive better in America than Mexican Americans, due to differences in immigration laws. Puerto Ricans were found to be three times as likely to risk alcohol-related disorders and Mexican Americans ranked second. Researchers believe this to due to cultural linkages since the majority of Puerto Ricans are American born and do not have to worry about immigration laws. As a result of the study, researchers recommended that communities take preventative measures within the Hispanic community to lessen the risk of alcoholism from recurring.
